This is my third Xterra trail race and my third third place finish. This is also my third trip to Dinosaur Valley SP. It is also my second of three night trail races sort of. I will get to that in a future blog. The pattern of three was interesting but just a sidebar. I had done a few road 10Ks prior to this run. The distance did not bother me but the course was brutal. This is my second race here and this course was more difficult and it took me five minutes longer than my first trail 5K at the park. This course lead the runners to the top of park and on the steepest trail in the park. The first mile was basically straight up hill with a few flat breaks. We were literally going uphill with hands on the ground. The rest of the course was downhill but very technical and very dark. The single track downhill was also on the side of cliffs, so falling off of one of those kept my pace slower than normal. My time of 47:04 was not too bad considering the conditions. It was also a hot and humid Texas July night.
At this point, I did not realize I do not like running at night. I ran two more times at night and now I will not do it anymore. I say so but it might happen again in a special circumstance.
My next trail run is at my favorite place to trail run. Plus it is just five minutes from home.
I ran another Xterra race and had a good time. The race was on Father’s Day and did not realize it until the race was over. The race was in Huntsville State Park and I got to do some hiking the day before. The course was really nice with some good elevation changes but only one real drastic climb. I had a good time of 34:27 which is one of my best times this year. I also ran into a few runners I have seen and talked to at other races earlier this year.
I took third again at an Xterra race. Good times and a good race.
My next trail race was another Xterra race at one of my favorite state parks.
I am back to the entry level running distance. I am finding out this is what the 5K is about. It is a starter distance for longer runs. I am now consistently finishing high in the standings at most runs. I like the feeling of placing but my long goal is longer races and finishing the long races.
The Rock Dallas 5K was at Murrell Park off of Grapevine Lake. I have run parts of this park several times but not this part but it did overlap a bit. This is the first night trail race I have run. The good thing is that the sun set late so most of the race was at dusk not dark. I did use my night light on parts of the trail but for the most part I had some natural light. I finished in a good time of 48:07 on some not extremely difficult but not easy trails. I think the night time slowed my pace also. I did finish in 3rd place by less than 20 seconds.
I like the Xterra race production and will run two more of their races.
The next race is also a Xterra production 5K with similar results.
