I was back in the Texas hill country this summer. We had a family vacation in Utopia, TX. The city is located in the center of three state parks and is about an hour west of San Antonio. The central focus of the vacation was relaxing and tubing on the area’s rivers. I could not pass up a chance to do some hill country hiking with three state parks so close. I actually never heard of the three local parks and had no idea what they had to offer. By the end of the vacation, I put all three parks in my top ten favorites. I started with a short hike on the Sabinal River which just happened to be right outside of our cabin. The water was crystal clear and I mean bottled water clear.
I love this area of Texas. The clear water and great hiking spots. The area also features scenic drives and numerous state parks and recreational areas. The Frio River is great for tubing, rafting and canoeing. We were there and it had not rained in a long time and the rivers were still flowing. Plus I can say I stayed a week in Utopia.
The next blog post will be about the biggest surprise of the vacation. A state park so beautiful that words cannot do it justice. It is the most unique park in the hill country.
